I wonder if you usually read some classical Chinese texts. For a long time, I thought classical Chinese was really difficult to understand because when I looked up a dictionary, each character had many meanings, and these meanings didn't seem to be related at all. Even if I finally chose a meaning, I still didn't really understand it, and I wasn't sure if I was fitting the wrong thing onto the horse's mouth. The next time I encountered the same character elsewhere, I could only stare blankly and worry.
It wasn't until later when I looked up "Explaining Characters" that I suddenly saw the light. It turns out that each character has its original meaning, and it is closely related to the character shape. For example, the ancient form of the character "间" is a closed "door" with "moonlight" leaking through in the middle, meaning there is a gap in the door! Knowing this, it is much easier to understand the dozens of seemingly unrelated extended meanings of the character "间" later.
This is the benefit of tracing the origin in the process of learning a language:
1) It can accurately grasp the fundamental meaning of words and characters, rather than being confused by a bunch of seemingly unrelated explanations;
2) When encountering a new usage of a word or character, even if you guess, you can get it right about eight or nine times out of ten;
3) On the basis of understanding, memory is much easier (if you don't believe it, try looking up the Kangxi Dictionary. How many of the more than a dozen meanings of the character "间" can you remember?). Our brains don't mind information volume; what they mind is information lacking mutual connection and meaning.
I've been talking about classical Chinese for a long time when commenting on a dictionary app for learning English. But if you think about it carefully, isn't the process of learning classical Chinese for us just like learning a foreign language? They are both second languages!
The original meanings of all words are contained in the process of creating characters. Chinese is a pictographic language, and its original meaning is reflected in the shape of the characters. While English is "created" on the basis of Latin, French, German, etc. according to certain rules, and the "materials" used to create characters are the basic vocabulary of these languages, which are called roots in English. I'm sure you understand this. Recombining and deriving roots according to certain rules is the process of creating English words.
And by mastering these roots and the rules (prefixes, suffixes, etc.) used in the process of creating characters, you will master the fundamental meaning of words, and your vocabulary can increase greatly. Even when encountering words you haven't seen before, you can still guess about eight or nine times out of ten.
This is an app that everyone who wants to improve their English level should have, the best companion for memorizing words.
