Oracle bone script, also known as inscribed shell and bone characters, oracle bone inscriptions, or tortoise shell and animal bone script, is the earliest known systematic form of Chinese writing and one of the four ancient writing systems in the world. It has methods of creating characters such as pictographs, indicatives, associative compounds, phonetic compounds, transfer characters, and borrowed characters, indicating that it has entered the mature stage. The oracle bone script of the Yin Ruins is a record of divination in the Yin Dynasty. Ancient Chinese oracle bone divination has a long history, and the Yin Ruins period was the most prosperous time for divination. Kings and nobles of the Shang Dynasty divined almost every matter, and divination became an important part of the social life of the Shang Dynasty. A set of strict and systematic institutions was formed regarding the tribute collection, storage, treatment, drilling of oracle bones, as well as divination methods, procedures, and the grammar and diction examples of oracle bone inscriptions. According to oracle bone inscriptions, there were already specialized diviners in the Yin Dynasty who were in charge of divination and record-keeping. There were about a hundred diviners mentioned in oracle bone inscriptions. The content of divination included sacrifices, celestial phenomena, harvests, military expeditions, royal affairs, and even the king's hunting, illness, dreams, and giving birth. After the Shang Dynasty, oracle bone divination gradually lost its prominent position. The discovery of oracle bone script in the Yin Ruins witnessed the vanished divination system of the Shang Dynasty and provided important materials for studying the history of Chinese culture.
Currently, about 150,000 oracle bones and more than 4,500 individual characters have been discovered in the Yin Ruins. From the approximately 1,500 recognized individual characters of oracle bone script, oracle bone script already has the basic form of modern Chinese character structure. Although its script style has undergone evolutions such as bronze inscriptions, seal script, official script, and regular script, the characters with the characteristics of form, sound, and meaning and the basic grammar have been retained, becoming the square characters still used by one-fifth of the world's population today. It has had an important impact on the Chinese way of thinking and aesthetics and laid the foundation for the emergence and development of Chinese calligraphy art. Oracle bone script has thus become the only ancient writing system among the four ancient writing systems in the world that has been passed down to the present. Chinese characters evolved from oracle bone script have played an important role in spreading Chinese culture and promoting the formation and consolidation of a unified Chinese country.
## Current Inclusion Status
1,126 Chinese characters and 13,878 oracle bone script graphics. These characters are classified into categories such as Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches, weapons, utensils, directions, locations, ritual and music sacrifices, colors, time, numbers, nature, animals, plants, appellations and identities, and body according to their meanings.
